How is Gen Z different from
Millennials? How is Gen Z already impacting the world?
Elmore, Tim. “Seven Shifts As
Generation Y Becomes Generation Z.“ Psychology
Today. 21 Sept. 2015. Web.
This
was a short article. It’s been a bit hard finding articles because this topic
is fairly new so there aren’t too many opinions on it. As I am reading these
articles, though, I am realizing that everyone is kind of having the same
general opinions on Gen Z. I am doing my best to find as much as I can on this
topic but I am finding it a bit hard. But I will keep pushing. The title of
this article basically explains what it is about; seven ways Generation Z is
different from Generation Y (or the Millennials).
The
biggest point that got my attention is how Generation Z is becoming more
realists than optimists like Gen Y. This seems to be a continuing thought in
many of the articles that I read and I do agree with it. Gen Z has came into
the world facing debt, discrimination, terrorism, and environmental issues.
This generation has been trained to grow up fast and to think practically. I
also agree with Elmore’s point on confidence morphing into caution because of
these factors that gen z has grown up with. But I may disagree with the
confidence part, as gen z is pretty self-confident in the ways that they live
their life. I think the term careless would be more fitting; carelessness
morphing into caution. I do disagree when Elmore says, “Attaining an education
is morphing into hacking one.” Many of gen z does realize that they can
self-educate themselves but they also realize that going to college is what is
going to help them on their way to success. As seen, the percentage of people
going to college has gone up significantly because many of us want that higher
education. I do agree with his point that, “spending money is morphing into
saving money”. As we have seen debt and the economy being absolute crap (sorry
for the non-scholarly term) we have come to the realization that we do need to
be saving money as much as possible.
Elmore
would agree with Williams (1st source) on all, if not, many of
Williams’ views, especially Williams’ comment on how Gen Z has many parallels
to the Silent Generation and how Gen Z is going to be richer than the
generations before them. I find myself in agreement with Williams more than I
do with Elmore and that may be because Williams’ views are a bit more
descriptive and backed up with evidence.
New Questions:
·
Why has Generation Z become more
realist/cautious?
·
What events have happened during years gen z has
been born and what environment did they grow up in?
·
How had their parents’ generation influenced
them?
It’s time to start looking at
history and previous generations to find how they have influenced this
generation.
Answers:
·
Gen z is far more tech savvy than any other
generation
·
Gen z aims big but knows how to determine
reality from a dream
·
Gen z wants to fix everything that’s wrong with
the world
Gen z is kind of lazy...
