Citation- Clemmitt, Marcia. "Cyber Socializing." CQ Researcher 28 July 2006: 625-48. Web. 2 Oct. 2015.
This article is about the pros and cons of cyber socializing and the effects that it can have on its users. It mainly focuses on how it effects adolescents and young adults. The main argument for the how social media contributes to bad communication is that with social media you may not know who you are talking to and what that persons motive is for talking to you. Their are a lot of predators on social media that prey on young people. The main argument for how social media can have positive effects on communication is that it keeps people in touch with their family and friends. Extended relationships are preserved with social media.
This source changed my thinking by providing possible counter arguments to their main argument. The main idea of this source was to give examples of how social media could a be positive or negative way to communication. It leaves the reader with a chance to make his own opinion of social media. I disagree with how the source brings about the negative effects of social media when it comes to communication. This is because it dealt mostly with how social media can lead to sexual assault. It left out other possible negative effects of social media such as, a decline of real world interaction, possible loneliness, and bullying. This source answers a few questions related to my topic, but it also left some questions unanswered and brought upon new questions to ask myself.
New questions to ask self after reading:
Is sexual assault the only negative effect of social media?
Can the cyber world help a persons communication skills in the real world?
How do young adults perceive social media? Do they believe it is beneficial?
Do the positive effects of social media out weigh the negative? Vice versa?
Next, for my research I will find sources that will fill in the holes/unanswered question of this source. This source provide a lot of statistics, but did not provide how people view social media. It included obvious facts but did not dig deep into how social media effects the communication of young adults. The source provided me with a good starting point, but for my next sources I will dig deeper into how it effects young adults.
