Abby Robinson-Source 3

  • Question: "Does gender alter human-animal interactions?"
  • Source: Herzog, Harold A. "Gender Differences in Human-Animal Interactions: A Review." Ebsco Host. N.p., 1 Mar. 2007. Web. 6 Oct. 2015.
  • Summarize:in this article, it is discussed whether gender has an influence on the interactions between humans and animals. It takes into account the results of several studies previously done by others. It has been found that women care more about the well being of individual animals than men, but men tended to care more about habitat conservation and species preservation. It is reviewed that there tend to be little to no differences in the attachment men and women have to pets. It was found that two-thirds of humans who are considered to be animal hoarders were women. When it came to involvement in fighting for animal rights, women outnumbered men. Although, men outnumber women in the political forces that are involved in pushing movements forward that fight for animal rights. When it came to hunting and abuse, more men tended to take part in this than women. Although it is believed the presence of anti-social traits in a person caused them to be more likely to abuse animals.
  • Think: This source changes my thinking, by making me think about how female interactions tend to be more positive, and male interactions with animals tend to be more negative based off of the results of the studies discussed in this article. I agree with the source when it discusses how women tend to be less involved in recreational hunting, and that men are more likely to display anti-social behavior leading to animal abuse. But I disagree with it when it discusses how women tend to be more in favor of animal rights, and women tend to have more positive interaction with animals than men. there is not very much strong data in this article to back up its arguments. This article helps me to answer the question of whether gender alters human-animal interaction. The answer is yes, males tend to have more negative interaction with animals based off of the studies discussed.
  • Synthesize: When this article discusses animal abuse, it relates to the article "Activists, Circus Square Off Over Use of Elephants", when it discusses how the elephants were being mistreated according to the animal activist groups that took Ringling Bros. to court. It was discussed how the elephants were hit with bullhooks which resulted in injury. While this article discusses how studies have shown that males are more likely to abuse animals, so it could be discussed whether male workers at the circus were behind the supposed abuse.
  • Question: This source has lead me to ask many new questions: what characteristics do men have leading to more animal interaction? why are more women involved in fighting for animal rights? why do women tend to hoard animals more than men? what antisocial behavior indicates the possibility for animal abuse? the right questions to ask would be questions that pertain to specific gender differences leading to the differences in animal interaction. my research should move next toward another difference amongst humans that would alter the likeliness of one getting involved in fighting for animal rights. The answers I have so far, are that the care of animals in the entertainment business should not be harmful physically or mentally, there is similarity in brain structure/function between animals and humans, and gender makes a difference in human interaction. these answers work together by discussing how animals can be altered by maltreatment similarly to humans, and how likely one is to fight for the end of animal maltreatment based off of gender.
